AI Disruption Hits Call Centers: Half of Jobs at Risk by 2030

AI Disruption Hits Call Centers: Half of Jobs at Risk by 2030

Global corporations are accelerating their use of artificial intelligence in customer support, a field that once required human operators, and the layoffs are already piling up. According to a report from Bloomberg, Forrester Research predicts that by 2030, AI could eliminate half of all call center jobs—a sector that employs millions from the United States to India and the Philippines.

The specter of automation has haunted the industry for years, but now cost-cutting pressures and technological advances are pushing executives to move decisively. Microsoft cut its customer service staff by roughly 20 percent, dropping from 50,000 to 40,000 employees. "If little Johnny has an Xbox problem at 2 a.m., we can solve it with AI," explained Judson Althoff, the company's head of sales and customer support.

Uber also announced a 10 percent reduction in its customer support division, citing efforts to streamline operations, boost in-person collaboration, and deepen AI integration—areas where it claims significant progress. The most severe job losses are expected in the Philippines, where a strong English-speaking population and low wages have made it a hub for outsourced work, and where automation hits hardest.
