Anthropic Gives Claude’s Voice Chat a Brain Boost with Smarter Models

Anthropic announced a significant upgrade to Claude’s voice mode on Thursday, swapping in more powerful AI models to make spoken conversations richer and more natural. Previously limited to the lightweight Haiku model, voice chats can now tap into Claude’s Opus and Sonnet models, which are better at handling complex topics and longer exchanges. The change means users can hold deeper, more fluid discussions without the clipped responses that sometimes came from Haiku’s efficiency-first design.

The update also introduces the ability to switch between voice and text mid-conversation without losing your place. If you’re deep in a voice chat and need to go silent—say, you step into a quiet office—you can seamlessly move to typing. On top of that, voice mode now works with third-party tools like Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, and Canva. You can tell Claude to reschedule a meeting or draft replies to urgent emails just by speaking, making hands-free productivity more practical.

Language support has expanded significantly, adding French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and two Spanish variants to the existing English option. You’ll need to ask Claude to switch languages (or do it through the menu), but you can use your voice to make that request. The updated voice mode is available in beta on mobile, desktop, and web. Free users get the Haiku model and one connected tool, while paid subscribers can access all models and unlimited third-party apps. Usage counts toward standard plan limits.
