Anthropic Opens Claude’s Voice Mode to Smarter Models, Ties Into Gmail and Slack

Anthropic is rolling out its voice mode to the more powerful Opus and Sonnet models, breaking free from the previous limitation that kept the feature locked to the lighter Haiku model. Starting now, users can talk through complex problems and have Claude take real actions inside apps like Gmail, Slack, and Canva — a shift from the quick-answer tool it was a year ago.

When voice mode first arrived in 2025, Anthropic designed it for fast, shallow chats on Haiku. But the company noticed something: people weren’t just asking for weather updates. They were using voice to work through actual business challenges. Haiku, built for speed, kept those conversations short and light. The new rollout puts Sonnet and Opus behind the microphone — models Anthropic says are built for depth. They can analyze a tricky spreadsheet, turn a rambling discussion into a one-page pitch, or reschedule your meetings when your train is late.

Users can switch between typing and speaking mid-conversation, and even jump between models on the fly. Start a quick fact-check with Haiku, get an idea, then flip to Opus to flesh it out without losing context. The company is also expanding language support beyond English: voice mode now works in French, German, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese — all moving out of beta.
