Cambridge’s AI-Designed Antigen Passes First Human Trial, Promises Pandemic-Proof Vaccines

A team at the University of Cambridge has reached a milestone in vaccine development: the first human trial of a vaccine whose active ingredient was designed entirely by a computer. The results, published this week, show the AI-generated antigen triggered a strong immune response against multiple coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, SARS, and related bat viruses that could spark future outbreaks. No significant side effects were reported among the 39 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 50 at trial sites in Southampton and Cambridge.
What sets this approach apart is its ambition. Instead of reacting to a new virus and racing to update shots as it mutates—a cycle Professor Jonathan Heeney of Cambridge’s Department of Veterinary Medicine likens to “a dog chasing its tail”—the team trained a machine learning model on all known genetic sequences of Sarbeco coronaviruses. The AI then engineered a “super-antigen” containing features common across the entire group. The result, Heeney says, is a vaccine that should protect even against strains that haven’t emerged yet.
The technology could eventually be applied to other families of viruses, such as flu and Ebola, offering a single shot that stays effective as pathogens evolve. The next phase will test the vaccine in a larger, more diverse population to confirm its safety and efficacy. For now, the trial marks a shift from reactive vaccine development to proactive, future-proof design—a capability that could reshape how we prepare for the next pandemic.
