ChatGPT's Chrome Extension Can Now Read Your Open Tabs

ChatGPT's Chrome Extension Can Now Read Your Open Tabs

OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome so the assistant can look at your open tabs and use them to answer questions. The company retired its own browser on August 9 but has continued upgrading the extension, positioning ChatGPT as an alternative to Gemini in the browser.

Within a ChatGPT conversation, you can ask the assistant to review your open tabs. One example OpenAI gives is comparing couches spread across three tabs by dimensions, price, delivery time and return policy.

Users of ChatGPT Work, the agent built for complex multi-step tasks, can ask it to send messages, fill out forms and organize tabs. OpenAI suggests having it fill out a new dentist's form and add the appointment to your calendar, or analyze contractors' terms across several tabs and draft an email to the one that fits best.

The sidebar version of ChatGPT in Chrome can also access your full history, so you can give it tasks without leaving the page you're on. The extension is available on any plan, according to OpenAI, and works with other Chromium-based browsers including Microsoft Edge, Brave and Opera.

OpenAI has not detailed how tab data is handled or stored, a question likely to matter to anyone pointing the tool at pages containing personal information.
