Claude vs. ChatGPT: A Detailed Look at the Two AI Assistants

For many users, picking a winner between ChatGPT and Claude is a tough call. ChatGPT was the first large language model most people tried, gaining a huge user base quickly after its 2022 launch. It had no real competition until Anthropic released Claude in March 2023. Since then, both companies have kept upgrading their models and adding features. Because they overlap heavily—both offer coding modes and dedicated workspace modes—choosing the right tool for your needs can be tricky.

In everyday use, the two feel similar: you can code, get quick answers, summarize documents, organize files, or even write in the style of Herman Melville. But for more specific tasks, you need to consider which model fits your use case better.

Accuracy is hard to measure directly. According to the AA-Omniscience Accuracy benchmark, the flagship models—Claude Fable 5 (Max) and GPT 5.6 Sol (Max)—are close, with scores of 61 percent and 59 percent respectively. The gap is small enough that you won't notice it daily. However, for mid-tier models, ChatGPT's 5.6 Terra (Max) scores 46 percent, while Claude Sonnet 5 (Max) scores 38 percent.

Hallucination rates tell a different story. On the AA-Omniscience Hallucination Rate benchmark (lower is better), Claude's Fable 5 scores 55 percent versus ChatGPT's 89 percent. For mid-tier models, Claude Sonnet 5 scores 37 percent, while ChatGPT 5.6 Terra scores 85 percent. This means Claude is significantly less likely to make things up.

Usage patterns differ too. The Anthropic Economic Index from March 2026 shows 42 percent of Claude conversations were personal, 45 percent work-related, and the rest coursework. OpenAI reports that 70 percent of ChatGPT usage is non-work-related.

Claude Cowork, launched in January 2026, handles knowledge-based tasks like organizing files. You can create instruction bundles called skills, invoked with a forward slash, and use Claude Artifacts to render code snippets, HTML sites, interactive React components, and diagrams that can be shared online. ChatGPT also supports skills, but only in Codex and the API, not regular chats. ChatGPT's Sites feature is business-focused and only in Codex, and it can't pull live data like Claude Artifacts can with connected apps and MCP connectors.

ChatGPT does have better voice features—it sounds more natural and lets you interrupt without losing track. Its Advanced voice mode includes live video assistance. ChatGPT also generates photorealistic images, while Claude only builds diagrams, charts, and interactive visuals via HTML and SVG.

Is ChatGPT getting worse in 2026? Newer models score better on most benchmarks, but user experience seems to be declining. For instance, GPT-4o had a hallucination rate of 38 percent, while GPT-5.6 Sol's rate is 89 percent. OpenAI also added safeguards that change tone with updates, and started showing ads in free and ChatGPT Go tiers. Anthropic improved its free tier with more features and no ads. Since OpenAI loses money even on paying customers and CEO Sam Altman once called ads a "Last Resort," free-tier users may see more ads.

A key shift happened in February 2026. Anthropic's deal with the US Department of War fell through because it refused to allow its models for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. Hours later, OpenAI signed a similar deal with safeguards. This led many users to switch to Claude, perceiving Anthropic as more ethical.

Pricing is similar. Both free plans offer mid-tier models (Sonnet 5 for Claude, GPT-5.5 for ChatGPT), but ChatGPT includes ads. Claude's paid plans are $20/month ($17 if billed annually) for Pro, $100/month for Max 5x, and $200/month for Max 20x. These give access to flagship models and Claude Code. Pro users have token-based billing for Fable 5, while Max users can use 50 percent of weekly limits on it. ChatGPT has $20, $100, and $200 plans with similar benefits, plus an $8/month ad-supported plan. Codex access is free but with very low limits.
