FAA Prepares $875M AI System to Ease DC Airspace Congestion

An AI tool designed to help manage congestion in the busy airspace over Washington, DC, is set to begin advising air traffic controllers, according to Ars Technica. The limited launch would mark the first phase of a planned nationwide rollout across the 29 million square miles of US national airspace overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA calls the system SMART, describing it as using AI models to predict air traffic flows and spot potential conflicts based on airline schedules, weather, airport capacity, and airspace conditions. Government and industry officials told The Wall Street Journal that SMART could debut for the DC area's three major airports as soon as Monday, September 21.

Philip Mann, a principal consultant at Vector Strategic Consulting who spent 17 years at the FAA, called the decision to start with a limited scope the "right call." He said SMART's risk was never any single prediction but rather a national-scale system with more unknowns than anything the FAA has fielded, adding that every cut in scope shrinks those unknowns.

The system's forecasts and recommendations aim to give the FAA, airlines, and aircraft operators a shared view of conditions so they can agree on efficient routes and departure times. Goals include cutting fuel burn, improving on-time performance, and speeding recovery from weather and congestion.

Politico reported that the airline industry was confused for weeks about deployment plans. Anonymous airline officials said their concerns eased only after the FAA clarified that SMART would not change procedures for controllers or airlines and would instead provide "alternative route information" through existing FAA systems.
