Facebook Rolls Out Free Verified Badge to Help Real Humans Stand Out

Meta is rolling out a new Facebook Verified badge designed specifically for actual human beings — and it won't cost a cent. The move comes as the platform struggles to separate real users from an influx of AI-generated profiles, bots, and scammers. To get the badge, users will submit a quick facial recognition selfie, which the system cross-checks against existing profile photos. Meta says the process takes just a few minutes.

There's a catch: you need to be at least 18 years old and in good standing with Facebook's community standards. Once approved, the verified badge will appear across Marketplace, Dating, and other parts of the service. Unlike the paid Meta Verified program, this badge is purely about identity confirmation — it's not an endorsement of trustworthiness or credibility. The feature is free.

The timing is no accident. Scammers are increasingly using generative AI to craft fake profiles with realistic images and backstories, then automating messages at scale. Meta hopes the badge will give users a clearer signal when they're interacting with a real person, helping curb fraud and scams. The badge won't be available for Pages or ProMode accounts, and the rollout begins Monday in select markets before expanding globally.
