Ferrari's First EV Launch Triggers 6% Stock Drop as Investors Question the Strategy
Ferrari's stock took a 6.1% hit Tuesday morning after the luxury automaker unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce—Italian for "light"—at a Rome event. The Milan-listed shares have now fallen nearly 27% over the past year, signaling that even a brand synonymous with roaring engines faces headwinds in the EV transition.
The Luce marks a deliberate break from Ferrari's signature design language, a move CEO Benedetto Vigna described as "a new chapter." He emphasized the importance of "respect"—for the technology, which must be properly represented in the car's design, and for customers, both existing and new. "When you do a new technology, you need to make sure that technology is properly represented in the design," Vigna told CNBC.
But the timing raises questions. Rivals Porsche and Lamborghini have pulled back on EV launches due to weak demand, while Ferrari pushes forward. The Luce may attract a new breed of buyer, but investors appear unconvinced that the shift won't alienate the brand's traditional clientele. For now, the market is voting with its sell orders.
