Ford's Quality Rebound: How Human Expertise Trumped AI

In a significant turnaround, Ford has managed to improve its quality rankings by bringing back experienced engineers to complement its automated quality control processes. After introducing greater automation, the company encountered problems that cost it billions of dollars. However, by hiring around 350 veteran engineers over the past three years, Ford has been able to address its quality shortcomings and transform its latest vehicles into segment leaders. According to the 2026 JD Power Initial Quality Study, Ford climbed from 15th place to first among mainstream brands, surpassing longtime leaders Toyota and Honda. The study, which surveys thousands of new-vehicle owners, found that only premium brands Porsche and Genesis ranked higher. At the heart of Ford's problem were automated systems that often identified issues only after they had surfaced, leading to ballooning warranty claims and recall costs. In contrast, veteran engineers took a proactive approach, identifying potential failure points before they became major problems. By integrating this early troubleshooting process with automation tools and using engineers' experience to train AI models and younger staff, Ford has been able to reduce its warranty claims and recall costs. As Charles Poon, Ford Vice President of Vehicle Hardware Engineering, noted, the company recognized that its automation tools needed to be trained by experienced individuals to produce high-quality products. Ford's experience highlights the importance of human expertise in complementing AI, rather than replacing it. By combining the strengths of both, the company has been able to achieve a significant quality turnaround, with implications that extend beyond the auto industry.
