Google Search Gets a Brain Transplant: What the New AI-Powered Future Looks Like

At its annual I/O conference this week, Google made it official: the classic list of blue links is on its way out. The company is fundamentally retooling its search engine into a conversational AI agent, marking the biggest shift to the search box in over 20 years.

Starting with the rollout of Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default engine for AI Mode, Google is blending its vast live data—web pages, business listings, images, financial info—with advanced reasoning models. The result? A search box that expands to accept long, complex questions, uploads like photos and PDFs, and even taps into your open Chrome tabs for multi-step research.

Robby Stein, Google’s VP of product for Search, described the updates as a natural evolution from AI Overviews toward a unified, agentic experience. “People can ask really anything on their mind,” he said. A billion users already engage with AI Mode monthly, and the new system aims to handle everything from trip planning to health tracking with dynamic widgets and persistent mini-apps.

Perhaps the most telling change: AI Overviews now flow directly into a back-and-forth conversation with the AI, letting users drill down without starting over. While the system can’t book a reservation for you yet, it will compile matches with real-time pricing and availability, handing you the links to finalize. These features roll out this summer.

For business leaders, the message is clear: Google is no longer a search engine. It’s becoming an intelligent assistant that lives inside the search box—and that changes how users find, interact with, and act on information.
