Microsoft Build 2026 Preview: Agents Take Center Stage as AI Shifts from Chat to Action

Developer conference season is in full swing, and Microsoft’s Build event arrives on June 2-3 in San Francisco, sandwiched between Google I/O and Apple’s WWDC. For anyone tracking AI infrastructure and deployment trends, this year’s agenda signals a clear pivot: agentic AI is moving from experimental to operational.

CEO Satya Nadella’s opening keynote on June 2 at 10 a.m. PT will likely double down on Copilot as the company’s primary AI vehicle. During the latest earnings call, Nadella described Copilot as evolving from a synchronous assistant into an async coworker capable of executing long-running tasks. Agent Mode is now default across Office 365 apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For business leaders evaluating ML deployment, this represents a shift from simple chat interfaces to autonomous task execution—agents that can surface email insights or handle procurement.

Expect significant discussion around OpenClaw, the viral agent framework. Creator Peter Steinberger is hosting a breakout session, which suggests Microsoft sees agent orchestration as a critical layer in the stack. Reports also hint at a new coding model for GitHub Copilot, plus specialized models for reasoning, images, and speech.

Windows 12 remains a question mark. Microsoft hasn’t confirmed a launch, and while AI features keep piling into Windows, user frustration with intrusive Copilot has driven some to Linux.
