Microsoft’s AI chief says superintelligence is near, but won’t take your job

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, is making a bold prediction: superintelligence is coming soon, but it won't replace your job. In a recent interview, Suleyman argued that while AI will automate many tasks—like drafting emails or generating code—it won't eliminate entire roles. Instead, he envisions a future where AI frees workers to focus on higher-value, creative, and judgment-based work.

Suleyman also addressed Microsoft's evolving relationship with OpenAI. After recent contract renegotiations, Microsoft is now building its own frontier models, including the new MAI-Thinking-1 reasoning model, while still leveraging OpenAI's technology. He stressed that this dual approach ensures Microsoft can compete independently in the race toward superintelligence.

On the consumer front, Suleyman acknowledged public anxiety about AI but pushed back on claims that no valuable consumer products exist. He pointed to chatbots used by billions for tasks ranging from homework help to emotional support. However, he conceded that the value exchange isn't yet clear enough for many users.

Finally, Suleyman warned against anthropomorphizing AI, criticizing competitors who speculate about machine consciousness. He emphasized that AI should remain a controlled, accountable tool—not a being with rights or feelings.
