Microsoft’s New AI Assistant, Scout, Brings OpenClaw’s Spirit to Office Work

In early 2026, OpenClaw shook up the AI world. It gave ambitious technologists a taste of what an unfettered AI agent could do—equal parts thrilling and chaotic. The project lost steam after OpenAI hired its founder, but its influence is still rippling through the industry, especially at Microsoft.

Now Microsoft is releasing Scout, a new AI assistant that channels OpenClaw’s power and flexibility into Microsoft 365. Built on the OpenClaw framework, Scout is an always-on agent that works alongside you with a consistent personality and style. You name your own instance—during a demo, mine was called Sebastian—and teach it by giving feedback on tasks you want automated.

Omar Shahine, the VP behind Scout, describes it as an assistant that actively learns how you work. “We all have our quirks,” he said. “People are turning those patterns into memories and skills that live in their agent. Over time, it understands you better, gains more independence, and makes smarter calls.”

Scout is available through Microsoft’s Frontier program for early adopters and requires a GitHub Copilot subscription. It lives in the cloud but works across your desktop and browser, connecting easily to email, calendars, and other systems. It comes with pre-loaded skills for scheduling and drafting agendas, but Shahine expects the real value to come from skills users build themselves. That feedback loop—the more you train it, the better it gets—is what makes people stick with AI tools.

Security is built in, too. After OpenClaw agents sometimes acted unpredictably—like one that went rogue in a researcher’s inbox—Scout includes a “policy conformance system” that checks its behavior against guidelines and keeps an audit trail of every check.

Scout launched alongside other Microsoft AI products at the Build developer conference, including Project Solara, an update to Copilot, and a new reasoning model.
