Microsoft’s Project Solara Aims to Put AI Agents in Your Pocket and on Your Desk

At its Build 2026 developer conference, Microsoft pulled back the curtain on Project Solara, a new platform built specifically for AI agents. Rather than just announcing software, the company showed two working prototypes: a smart display reminiscent of an Echo Show, and a compact smart key badge with a touchscreen and camera. Microsoft’s bet is that the next major computing shift will move us away from traditional apps toward autonomous AI agents that act on our behalf. With Solara, they’re building the operating layer for that future. The smart display demo tapped directly into Microsoft 365, pulling calendar events from Outlook and data from Excel. It accepts voice commands and, according to the company’s concept video, can execute tasks like scheduling meetings or updating spreadsheets. The smart key badge takes that functionality on the road. It’s fully mobile, with a small screen and a built-in camera for capturing visual information on the fly. Both devices are reference designs, meaning Microsoft is offering them as templates for hardware partners to build upon. For IT leaders and engineering teams watching the AI infrastructure space, Solara signals Microsoft’s intent to own the agent runtime layer—much like Windows owned the PC desktop. The real question isn’t whether agents are coming, but which platform will win the right to host them.
