Moscow Region’s 112 Service Gets a Multilingual AI Translator

Emergency dispatchers near Moscow are about to get a high-tech assistant. Starting soon, the 112 service will roll out a neural network translator capable of handling calls in seven languages. The system is designed to automatically pick up incoming requests and recognize what the caller is saying, even if they don’t speak Russian. For operators, that means less time fumbling with phrasebooks or waiting for a human interpreter. The AI works in real time, processing speech and converting it into text or audio the dispatcher can understand. Officials say the move is aimed at helping tourists, migrant workers, and anyone else who might struggle with the local language during an emergency. The seven languages included cover the most common ones heard in the region, though the exact list hasn’t been fully detailed yet. This isn’t a full replacement for human operators—the translator is there to assist, not take over. But it should cut down on response times for non-Russian speakers, who previously had to rely on third-party translation services or simply hope for the best. The system is currently being tested and is expected to go live in the coming months. If it works as planned, the same technology could eventually spread to other regions. For now, though, Moscow Oblast is the testing ground.
