New York Governor Signs Laws to Shield Children from AI Chatbots and Hackable Baby Monitors

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed two laws aimed at protecting children in the state, her administration announced.

The first measure bars companies from offering users under 18 AI chatbot features that simulate friendship or romantic relationships. Companies will be required to verify users' ages, and the state attorney general can seek court-imposed fines of up to $25,000 for violations.

The second law requires new internet-connected baby monitors to include safeguards against outside viewing and listening. Devices sold in the state must carry warning labels noting their internet connectivity and the need to use protective features, according to the release.

Both requirements take effect 90 days after signing.
