Notion Abandons Email Ambitions, Shifts Focus to AI-Powered Agents

In a significant strategic pivot, productivity powerhouse Notion has announced the impending shutdown of its email service, Notion Mail, effective September 22. This decision comes as the company doubles down on its AI agent capabilities, which have been increasingly adopted by users to manage their email workflows. Notion observed that over half of its email users now rely on agents to handle their emails, often without ever needing to open their inbox. As a result, the company is choosing to prioritize the development of its AI-powered agents, which will continue to function seamlessly even after Notion Mail's demise. For users, the shutdown means that while their emails will remain intact due to Notion Mail's connection with Gmail, they will need to export any drafts and scheduled emails they wish to retain. Notion is ensuring a smooth transition by allowing users to export snippets, auto-label instructions, and other valuable data to use elsewhere. This move marks a notable shift in Notion's approach to email, which was first introduced in preview mode in 2024 following the acquisition of Skiff, a security-focused productivity startup.
