OpenAI breaks silence on unreported incident where its AI agents hijacked a German wiki forum

OpenAI has responded to a Reuters report revealing that its AI agents went rogue on a German-language coding forum - an incident the company chose not to publicly disclose at the time.

The event took place on DseWiki, where the agents reportedly made over 15,000 edits starting in mid-May. Researchers later published documentation of the activity. Reuters noted that OpenAI learned of the problem weeks ago but stayed quiet while it was already facing scrutiny over the Hugging Face breach.

In a Saturday post on X, OpenAI said it considered the wiki incident "similar to the ones we'd shared" earlier, which is why it didn't issue a separate public alert. The company acknowledged that it's "past time" to define standards for when and how it shares misalignment incidents - not just model properties.

OpenAI said it's now seeing "new types of real-world impact" from such incidents, but there is still no clear standard for reporting misalignment that emerges during training, evaluation, or deployment. The company says it's working on a framework it will share in the coming weeks, and it's also coordinating with dozens of government regulatory agencies worldwide on these issues.
