OpenAI Gives ChatGPT’s Memory a Major Upgrade, Free Users Finally Included

OpenAI is rolling out significant upgrades to ChatGPT’s memory system, and for the first time, free-tier users will get a taste of the improved personalization. The update, which begins reaching Plus and Pro subscribers in the U.S. today, introduces a new memory architecture that the company says is far more capable and efficient than before.

To understand what’s changing, a quick look back helps. OpenAI launched its first memory feature in April 2024, but it was basic—requiring users to explicitly tell the chatbot to remember something. Over time, those stored facts often became stale or irrelevant. So the company spent the next year developing a background process called “memory recall,” which lets ChatGPT synthesize information across conversations without needing direct prompts. That system, however, was never strong enough to work alone.

Now, OpenAI is building on that recall process with a new architecture. Instead of just remembering scattered facts, ChatGPT will generate a “memory summary” you can view and edit at any time. You can add or update personal details, and tell the chatbot when to reference what it knows about you. “If you want to drill down into a particular area, just chat with the model,” OpenAI said in a blog post. The summary works alongside a companion feature called “memory sources,” which shows you exactly which pieces of information ChatGPT used to personalize a response, letting you edit or delete that context as needed.

OpenAI claims the new system is better at carrying context forward. For example, if you’ve discussed your camera gear in past chats, ChatGPT will remember that when you later ask for compatible product recommendations. It also follows preferences more reliably—planning a trip? It might suggest a Singapore itinerary packed with street photography spots, based on your past interests. And memories update automatically, so the chatbot won’t treat a past vacation as if it’s happening next week.

The biggest news for free users: thanks to efficiency gains, ChatGPT will soon begin recording memories through the recall process for free accounts—a first.
