OpenAI Readies ChatGPT Speaker, Its First Hardware Push
July 14, 2026

OpenAI is gearing up to release its debut hardware device: a smart speaker powered by ChatGPT, according to a report from Bloomberg. The gadget will lack a screen but will use a camera and other sensors to perceive its surroundings. Sources say the speaker is slated to launch in 2027, part of a broader hardware lineup that could include roughly five devices.

The device will run on a rechargeable battery for portability and will offer smart home controls, media playback, and the ability to answer questions or respond to messages. Bloomberg notes it will feature GPT-Live, OpenAI’s upgraded voice model announced last week. The speaker will also include moving mechanical parts designed to mimic humanlike interaction. A previous report from The Information described a similar camera-equipped gadget that can recognize objects or people nearby.

The news arrives just days after Apple filed a lawsuit accusing OpenAI of stealing hardware secrets. OpenAI responded Tuesday, stating it is “not aware of any evidence that this complaint has merit.” OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive on the new devices, following a nearly $6.5 billion acquisition of his design firm, io Products. Separately, OpenAI has teased a Codex Micro gadget made with Work Louder, set for release on July 15th. OpenAI declined to comment on the Bloomberg report.
