Paul Schrader Predicts Fully AI Movie Stars Will Be Box Office Gold

At 79, Paul Schrader isn't your typical tech evangelist. The legendary screenwriter of *Taxi Driver* and director of *First Reformed* has been outspoken about experimenting with artificial intelligence, and his Thursday keynote at the AI on the Lot conference gave the converted crowd plenty to cheer about—and the rest of Hollywood plenty to worry about.

Schrader argued that AI's real commercial breakthrough won't come from flashy visual effects. "The tip of the spear is when we can create an AI protagonist, not a hybrid, and that movie makes money," he said. "You do the new Clint Eastwood, but you don't say his name to AI. You just describe him. And he comes up as Clint Eastwood."

He acknowledged the legal pushback that would follow. "Clint will say, 'You're stealing my image.' And you say, 'No, I just described somebody who is this tall, this weight. There are a lot of people who look like you, Clint.' And the movie comes out, and us carbon-based fools spend our money caring about silicon-based creations."

Schrader contrasted his vision with that of Albert Cheng, Amazon MGM's head of AI studios, who expects human actors to remain central due to copyright concerns. But Schrader sees a future where background extras are replaced entirely. "I was on the plane watching *Wicked*," he said. "Why pay extras $180 a day when they look so plastic? We have to clothe them and feed them. Why not just make them?"

He also pitched reviving old TV classics like *I Love Lucy* with AI-generated episodes. "Dust off those old IPs. That's an instant seller." Schrader, who has been developing a fully AI feature, read an eight-page treatment generated in minutes from his own past work. His conclusion: "AI doesn't create. It combines."
