Proposed Bill Could Affect Volvo and Polestar Owners: What It Means for Your Car

Two Michigan lawmakers have introduced a bill that could limit Chinese-made vehicles and those with significant Chinese ownership from entering the U.S. The Protecting America from Chinese Cars Act targets cars built by companies where Chinese entities hold more than a 15% stake. This would directly impact Volvo (owned by Geely, with a reported 78.7% stake) and Polestar (over 20% owned by Geely). The bill also aims to block vehicles from China and other adversarial nations from being driven into the U.S. from Canada or Mexico, even by tourists for a day.

For owners of European and Japanese vehicles like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda—including hybrids—this legislation likely won’t affect your current car. However, if you drive a newer Volvo or Polestar, it’s worth noting that the bill could eventually impact parts availability or future models. A similar Biden-era rule was recently waived for Volvo by the Trump administration, so there’s precedent for exceptions. The new bill would allow for “specific authorizations” under strict conditions.
