In the streets of San Francisco, it's not uncommon to see empty autonomous vehicles driving around, either waiting for a rider or heading to a depot for maintenance. These 'deadhead miles' are a major obstacle for robotaxi companies striving for profitability. Aseon Labs, a Redwood City-based startup, believes it has found a solution. The company has developed automated pods, roughly the size of a parking space, that can be strategically placed throughout cities to inspect, clean, and charge robotaxis. This innovative approach has garnered significant attention from investors, with Aseon Labs securing $10 million in a seed round led by Crane Venture Partners. The funds will be used to build prototypes, expand the team, and secure real estate for the pods. According to CEO George Kalligeros, the goal is to increase the utilization of robotaxis, allowing them to operate continuously throughout the day. By reducing deadhead miles, Aseon Labs aims to make robotaxi services more profitable. The company's founders, Kalligeros and Dan Keene, bring experience from developing and scaling hardware-and-real estate companies, including their previous venture, Pushme. They're applying this expertise to the autonomous vehicle industry, creating smaller, independently powered pods that can be easily deployed and relocated as needed.
