Runway’s New Media Router Picks the Best AI Model for Your Video or Image
July 23, 2026

Runway is shifting gears. The startup, best known for its AI video tools, is now positioning itself as the go-to infrastructure for companies building with generative media. On Thursday, it launched Runway Media Router through its developer platform, Runway Dev, giving clients API access to a mix of third-party and in-house models for image, video, and audio generation.

The tool automatically selects the best model for each request based on a developer’s priorities—speed, cost, or quality. While model routers are common in the world of large language models, Runway says this is the first built specifically for generative media. “The routing really fits into that overall promise of being the easiest one-stop shop for developers,” said Anthony Maggio, Runway’s chief product officer. Customers like Adobe, Cloudflare, and Expedia can now build media generation directly into their own products without sending users to Runway’s app.

The launch comes as the number of generative media models explodes, making it tough for developers to keep up. Maggio noted that Chinese models are gaining popularity, but some businesses may prefer American providers—especially with potential trade restrictions on the horizon. The router also handles token pricing, a hot issue as enterprises face high costs from agentic AI. On quality, the tool draws on Runway’s in-house creative team’s expertise in evaluating how models handle motion, composition, and lip-syncing. This intelligence layer was originally built for Runway’s own AI agent product, launched in May.

Runway hasn’t released a new frontier video model since December, and its text-to-video models no longer top the charts, where players like Google, ByteDance, and Alibaba now dominate. Rather than betting on a single model staying ahead, Media Router assumes the best model will keep changing—and keeps Runway relevant as an orchestration layer. “You need great models underneath, but the orchestration increasingly matters a lot,” said co-founder Anastasis Germanidis. “The router is one way in which the benefits of that come to users.”
