Singapore Locks In Major AI Pacts with Google and OpenAI, ChatGPT Creator Pledges $234M for Local Growth

Singapore has secured separate agreements with Google and OpenAI, marking a significant step in its push to become a leading AI hub. The deals, announced at the ATxSummit conference, include a National AI Partnership with Google and the first-ever memorandum of understanding between the city-state and OpenAI. Under the OpenAI pact, the ChatGPT-maker will invest over 300 million Singapore dollars ($234 million) to bolster the local AI ecosystem, including establishing the OpenAI Singapore Applied AI Lab—its first outside the U.S. The lab is expected to hire more than 200 people over the next few years, focusing on applying frontier AI to sectors like education, healthcare, finance, and digital infrastructure. OpenAI will also run training programs for mid-career engineers and co-develop AI startup accelerators.

Google’s agreement, while lacking a specific investment figure, centers on solving societal challenges, building an AI-ready workforce, and driving enterprise innovation. It includes training government researchers in agentic AI for science, working with the Ministry of Education to train educators, and exploring AI applications in healthcare through a global co-clinician research initiative. Google also released a joint whitepaper with Singapore’s government on safe AI agent deployment, building on a 2022 collaboration that saw Google DeepMind open a lab in Singapore last year.

These deals complement Singapore’s broader national AI strategy, which includes over 1 billion Singapore dollars in public AI research funding from 2025 to 2030. The city-state has already attracted commitments from AWS, Microsoft, and other global players, positioning itself as a neutral, talent-rich platform for developing and deploying AI solutions.
