The Internet's Quiet Retooling for an Agent-First World

The internet was designed for human rhythms—clicks, scrolls, pauses. But AI agents don't follow those patterns. They spawn sub-agents, hammer databases, and chain API calls at machine speed before disappearing. Cloud infrastructure, built for predictable human behavior, is now scrambling to catch up.

On May 28, AWS quietly updated its OpenSearch Serverless service to decouple compute from storage. The system can now spin up in seconds to handle agent-driven traffic spikes and drop to zero when those agents vanish. Tia White, AWS's GM for OpenSearch, said agents are moving from experimentation into production, creating traffic patterns that previous infrastructure wasn't designed for.

The data backs her up. Cloudflare reports that bots already accounted for 31% of HTTP traffic heading into 2026, with AI crawlers making up a quarter of those requests. Senior product manager Lai Yi Ohlsen predicts non-human traffic will exceed human traffic by mid-2027.

Major vendors are retooling. Microsoft updated Azure to manage memory sharing between agents and absorb bursts. Databricks and Snowflake are repositioning as retrieval systems built for AI memory. Cloudflare introduced Mesh, a private networking fabric that gives agents shared IP space, plus an Agent Readiness score to help sites prepare for machine visitors.

Google previewed at I/O how users will hand off research and booking tasks to AI. The company now generates custom UI components on the fly, fans out research across agents, and deploys code within the response. Robby Stein, VP of product for Search, described the system as planning, researching, and building in one fluid motion.

Meanwhile, Infoblox and GoDaddy back open standards like DNS-AID and Agent Name Service, aiming to give agents verifiable identities without new centralized registries. The goal: let agents from different creators find and trust each other at scale.

The rewrite is underway. Companies that treat agents as first-class citizens in their architecture will set the standards. Those that wait risk building on foundations already cracking under machine load.
