Remember the BlackBerry phone? The company that once ruled your pocket has quietly become the invisible brain inside millions of cars and factory machines. Now, a new wave of robots is pushing its QNX software into the spotlight.

The term is “physical AI” — machines that see, think, and act in the real world without hesitation. Think humanoid workers on assembly lines or self-driving cars that never miss a safety stop. These systems need split-second timing and zero tolerance for error. QNX delivers that. Its core promise: commands execute on time, every time.

A recent survey of 1,000 developers, released May 27, 2026, shows 89% see physical AI as critical to their future. Yet software is their biggest headache. Teams can train clever AI models to recognize objects, but struggle to make those models behave safely inside a moving machine. Traditional tools don’t cut it. QNX was built for this.

The numbers back the story. QNX sales rose 14% for the full fiscal year and jumped 20% in the fourth quarter. The design-win backlog hit $950 million. BlackBerry has gone from burning cash to steady profits, with $232 million in net cash and a stock that climbed more than 50% in recent weeks.

Cars were the proving ground. QNX runs safety systems in Mercedes, Toyota, and others. But as one executive put it, cars are just robots on wheels. The same software now powers factory arms, medical devices, and defense platforms. In April 2026, BlackBerry integrated QNX into Nvidia’s IGX Thor platform, pairing high-performance computing with real-time control.

At Embedded World in February, QNX showed a humanoid robot picking objects and reacting instantly when a person stepped near. That kind of behavior isn’t a feature you add later. It has to be the foundation.

Competitors are chasing open-source alternatives, but rebuilding QNX from scratch would cost an estimated $12 billion and take a decade. That moat matters. Developers need software they can trust before they can scale AI into production. QNX has spent 40 years earning that trust.

BlackBerry no longer sells phones. It sells certainty. In a world where robots will work alongside humans, certainty is everything.
