Three Top VCs on AI’s Real Signal vs. the Noise
At a recent TechCrunch event in Athens, I sat down with three prominent venture capitalists—Niko Bonatsos of Verdict Capital, Andreas Stavropoulos of Threshold Ventures, and Ben Blume of Atomico—to cut through the hype around AI investing. Their insights offer a grounded look at where the market stands.
On the looming mega-IPOs from SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic, Stavropoulos compared the moment to the Google IPO, which revived tech investing in the early 2000s. “Each wave of change scales by orders of magnitude,” he said. Blume noted these liquidity events recycle wealth into the next generation of startups. Bonatsos pointed to immigrant founders like Elon Musk as proof that big dreams still pay off.
When asked whether SpaceX’s potential $1.75 trillion valuation could drain public markets, Stavropoulos dismissed the concern. “It will bring more people into the market than it soaks up,” he said, citing the rise of retail trading. Blume added that space investing captures imagination, drawing attention that outweighs any short-term capital squeeze.
On AI’s funding frenzy, Bonatsos was blunt: “In 17 years, I’ve never seen more groupthink.” Three-quarters of venture capital last year went to just five companies. Yet he acknowledged real productivity gains: two founders with AI tools can now achieve in two months what once took a team of ten a full year. Stavropoulos warned of a correction, but said long-term optimism is warranted—just not for every 19-year-old with a pitch deck.
For pricing deals, Blume stressed walking away when ownership gets too thin for a $500 million fund competing with billion-dollar players. Bonatsos focuses on “freaks”—founders working in markets that don’t yet have names, where valuations stay low. On age, Stavropoulos noted that disruption favors inexperience, while Blume looks for intensity and mental agility over birth year.
Finally, on white space: Bonatsos sees consumer internet making a comeback, with few VCs left to back it. Blume bets big on AI interacting with the physical world—robotics beyond the humanoid hype. For business leaders, the message is clear: ignore the herd and look for the edge cases that don’t fit the narrative.
