Trump Administration Weighs New Watchdog for AI Safety

The White House is exploring the creation of an independent regulatory body to evaluate the safety of artificial intelligence models, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. The proposed agency would report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and take industry input into account, similar to how the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority oversees financial services.

The plan, developed with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is currently with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles for review. President Trump has not yet seen the proposal. The move comes after Silicon Valley leaders voiced frustration over what they described as abrupt U.S. measures that slowed the rollout of advanced AI systems. The new framework would give both tech and financial sectors a bigger role in shaping safety standards.

In a related development, AI firm Anthropic said late last month that the U.S. government reinstated access to its most powerful model, Mythos 5, for several American safety organizations. Previously, Washington had blocked access to Mythos 5 and another model, Fable 5, for foreign entities and citizens over national security concerns. AI remains a central pillar of Trump’s agenda to maintain U.S. technological leadership, boost economic competitiveness, and strengthen national security.
