US Navy Taps Applied Intuition for $25M AI Sensor System on Destroyers

The US Navy has selected American company Applied Intuition to install an artificial intelligence-based situational awareness system on its destroyers, according to a company statement.

The deal marks the first contract of its kind for serial production and deployment of AI data-processing infrastructure across the fleet's crewed and uncrewed platforms.

The new Intelligent Perception System is expected to handle two jobs at once. It will gather data from various cameras and infrared sensors and fuse it into a single coherent picture for sailors, including warnings about possible collisions. It will also record sensor data and transmit it ashore when communications bandwidth is sufficient and security requirements are met.

The contract is valued at $25 million.
