What’s a W Engine? (And Why It Matters for Your Car)

You’ve probably heard of V6 and V8 engines. But what about a W12 or a W16? These are rare, high-performance engines mostly built by Volkswagen Group—the same company behind Audi, Bentley, and Bugatti. They pack more cylinders into a smaller space by arranging them in three or four banks, instead of the usual two in a V engine.

For everyday drivers of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda vehicles—including hybrids—this doesn’t mean you’ll see a W engine under your hood. These powertrains were reserved for special models like the VW Passat W8 (2001–2005), Audi A8 W12, Bentley Continental GT, and the Bugatti Veyron and Chiron with their mighty W16s. They offered incredible power but also lower fuel economy and higher cost.
