Why Google’s Cheaper, Faster AI Models Are Winning Over Enterprise Teams
May 17, 2026

For years, Google has played catch-up in the AI race. But its Gemini Flash models are now quietly winning where it counts: in production workloads where speed and cost determine what gets deployed.

Evidence comes from Vercel’s AI Gateway, which routes traffic from thousands of developers and enterprises to large language models. In March, Anthropic led in tokens processed. By early April, Google’s Gemini 3 Flash had taken the top spot and stayed there.

“Enterprise teams tend to pick Gemini Flash and Claude Haiku—the smallest, fastest, cheapest models each lab ships,” Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch told Business Insider. He noted Flash sees strong B2C adoption “because it doesn’t hallucinate much, uses tools effectively, and it’s fast and affordable.”

These aren’t isolated anecdotes. Google reported more than 8 million paid seats of Gemini Enterprise across 2,800 companies by early 2026. In Q4 2025 alone, those deployments handled over 5 billion customer interactions—a 65% year-over-year increase. More than 120,000 enterprises now use Gemini in some form, including 95% of the top 20 global SaaS companies.

The Flash models succeeded where earlier Gemini iterations struggled. Engineers optimized for low latency and high throughput, adding controllable thinking capabilities that let the system decide when to reason deeply and when to answer quickly. The result fits naturally into production workflows.

Partners have leaned in. Atlassian integrated Gemini 3 Flash into its Rovo agent. Box launched agents powered by Flash and Gemini Enterprise. Oracle introduced an AI Database Agent that lets users query data in natural language without writing SQL.

Challenges persist—quality fluctuations during model transitions and deprecations of older previews require migration planning. But the momentum is real. On Vercel’s gateway, Google’s spend share climbed from 8% to 21% in the measured period, while Anthropic still leads at 61%.

Rauch captured the reality: “What we see in production looks nothing like the benchmark leaderboards.” For technology leaders, the message is clear. The models that deliver consistent value at reasonable cost will define the winners. Google’s Flash series has earned a prominent place in that group.
