Why Your AI Agents Are Only as Good as the Network Connecting Them

For all the buzz about AI models and agents, the real bottleneck in enterprise AI isn’t the intelligence—it’s the infrastructure underneath. After years covering data pipelines and ML deployments, I’ve seen too many promising AI projects stall because the network couldn’t keep up with the demands of real-time inference and agent coordination.

Cisco’s message at this year’s Cisco Live is refreshingly direct: the network is the foundation for the agentic era. While individual nodes—models, silicon, applications—get the headlines, the connections between them determine whether AI actually works at scale.

Three themes stood out. First, operations built for humans and agents together. Cisco Cloud Control collapses what used to be a dozen dashboards into a single pane of glass where IT teams and AI agents collaborate on live data. The platform now includes AI Canvas, a workspace where operators and agents diagnose issues using network telemetry, and Cloud Control Studio, which lets customers build custom agents using natural language and integrations with AWS, ServiceNow, and Slack.

Second, security that keeps pace with modern threats. The window between vulnerability disclosure and exploitation has shrunk to minutes. Cisco’s Live Protect acts as a runtime shield for supported products—no reboots, no maintenance windows—and the company is stress-testing its own gear against frontier-model attacks through partnerships with Anthropic and OpenAI.

Third, preparing for what’s coming. Cisco IQ now offers Resilient Infrastructure Services to assess exposure to frontier model risks, plus Quantum Ready Assessments to address “harvest now, decrypt later” threats. Customers like AdventHealth and Nestlé are already using these insights to harden their infrastructure.

The takeaway for business leaders: invest in your models, yes. But if your network can’t handle the load, your AI strategy will hit a wall.
