Your Chat History Isn’t Private. Here’s How to Lock It Down.

Millions of people now turn to AI chatbots for everything from coding a game to venting about their day. But while you’re asking ChatGPT for meal plans or confiding in a Claude companion, those conversations are often being saved and fed back into the system to train the next generation of AI. Unless you take a few minutes to change the defaults, your personal data is fair game.
The good news is that most major chatbots let you opt out—you just have to know where to look. For Google’s Gemini, start by visiting myactivity.google.com and turning off Web & App Activity. That stops new data from being recorded. Then, inside Gemini itself, click the Settings cog, go to Activity, and set it to Off. Don’t forget to delete past chats using the delete button on the same page. Over on Claude, click your profile icon, open Settings, then Privacy, and toggle off “Help improve our AI models.” You can also delete all your conversations by selecting Chats, picking Select All, and hitting Delete. Just know that Anthropic keeps deleted chats for up to 30 days.
ChatGPT users should click their profile icon, go to Settings, then Data controls, and switch off “Improve the model for everyone.” That one toggle also disables audio and video recording options. To wipe your history, use the dedicated delete button in that same menu. For Meta’s platforms, there’s no straightforward switch—making your profiles private is your best bet, or you can submit an opt-out form and hope Meta acts on it. Grok on X is simpler: head to More, Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, then Grok & Third-Party Collaborators, and uncheck the box allowing your data to be used for training. You can also clear your conversation history there. The key takeaway: act now, because once your data has been used to train a model, there’s no taking it back.
